Video of the Week: Constant Lovers “Amazon Trickle”

July 23, 2014 By LoserCityBoss Leave a Comment

Sometimes videos don’t need epic budgets or nudity or gimmicky choreography. All they need is a stupid awesome idea like painting the bottom half of your face to look like a skull while you lip sync your lyrics in an exaggerated fashion. At least that’s what I’ve learned from Constant Lovers‘ “Amazon Trickle,” a video that pairs the song’s prime era Touch ‘n’ Go sinewy aggression with the aforementioned goofy skull face (but not that Skull Face).

All of Experience Feelings, the newish album “Amazon Trickle” emerged from, is full of a twisted rage, but from the cover art’s expert use of credits to block out genitals on down to song titles like “Snickerdoodles are the Best Cookies” and “I am Your Skunk,” it’s clear Constant Lovers ultimately have a good sense of humor about themselves, like a bearded, flannel garbed Mclusky. “Amazon Trickle” emphasizes that in a no budget way, with the special effects coming in the form of doll hands and tiny cans of coke and horrifying close-ups of open mouth chewing; it’s captivating in its bold embrace of ugliness, which serves to diffuse the aggression and ramp up the cheekiness and that’s totally cool. Maybe not the best video for the lunch hour unless you’re trying to scare off those jackasses who always look over your shoulders, in which case soldier on.

Nick Hanover got his degree from Disneyland, but he’s the last of the secret agents and he’s your man. Which is to say you can find his particular style of espionage here at Loser City as well as Ovrld, where he contributes music reviews and writes a column on undiscovered Austin bands.  You can also flip through his archives at  Comics Bulletin, which he is formerly the Co-Managing Editor of, and Spectrum Culture, where he contributed literally hundreds of pieces for a few years. Or if you feel particularly adventurous, you can always witness his odd .gif battles with Dylan Garsee on twitter: @Nick_Hanover
