Weeknight function like a New York synth scene take on the Raveonettes, but where that other duo has made a career out of black leather and black & white noir tones, the two piece’s “Dark Light” video shows they’re not afraid of a little color, particularly of the Dia de los Muertos variety. Filled with black light face paint and the kinds of bad ass school uniform clad chicas Robert Rodriguez likes to insert into his neo-grindhouse flicks, “Dark Light” has a lot of fun with its darkness. The video flits between a focus on the appropriately skeletal Weeknight during the fuzz bass and dual vocal attack verses and the best synchronized group dancing this side of the xx’s “Islands” during the synth heavy choruses. Director Austin M. Kearns does an excellent job depicting an otherworldy New York that seems dislodged from time yet paradoxically of the moment; the figures flanking Holly and Andy are chic in their high waisted jeans and gold hoop earrings but their fashion falls in line less with Vice Do’s than it does the uniform of doomed teenage lovers of yesteryear. There are forties and baseball bats and ample booty shots but “Dark Light” is a seductive danse macabre not just another selfie strip tease.

Nick Hanover got his degree from Disneyland, but he’s the last of the secret agents and he’s your man. Which is to say you can find his particular style of espionage here at Loser City as well as Ovrld, where he contributes music reviews and writes a column on undiscovered Austin bands. You can also flip through his archives at Comics Bulletin, which he is formerly the Co-Managing Editor of, and Spectrum Culture, where he contributed literally hundreds of pieces for a few years. Or if you feel particularly adventurous, you can always witness his odd .gif battles with Dylan Garsee on twitter: @Nick_Hanover
